사람이 IT 기기, 그 자체가 되는 셈이다. 웨어러블을 넘어 '전자 피부' 시대가 열리고 있다.
미국 매사추세츠공대(MIT) 미디어랩 연구팀은 최근 마이크로소프트(MS)와 함께 '듀오스킨(Duoskin)'이란 기술을 선보였다. 피부에 금박(金箔)을 소재로 한 'IT 문신(文身)'을 입혀 마치 전자기기처럼 활용하는 기술이다. 방법은 간단하다. 그래픽 소프트웨어로 전기회로를 그린 뒤 금박을 입히고 이를 스티커처럼 피부에 붙이면 된다. 금박은 고급스러운 이미지와 색상으로 이용자들의 거부감이 덜하고 피부에도 안전하다는 점이 고려됐다. 화려하고 심미적인 금박이, 피부에 전자회로를 입히는 것에 대한 사람들의 거부감을 잠재우는 효과도 있다.
전자 피부는 다양하게 활용된다. 우선 피부를 마우스, 키보드, 리모컨, 스마트폰 디스플레이 같은 하나의 입력장치로 만들 수 있다. 팔목에 입힌 문신을 만져 TV의 채널·음량을 조절하고, 노트북 모니터의 커서를 상하좌우로 움직일 수도 있다.
온도에 반응하는 소재를 사용하면 체온에 따라 문신의 색(色)이 변한다. 예를 들어 처음엔 붉은색 장미 문신이었지만, 체온이 올라가면 백(白)장미로 바뀌게 만드는 것이다. LED(발광다이오드)를 적용해 불이 반짝반짝 들어오게 할 수도 있다. 이 문신을 적용하면 사람의 기분이나 체온 변화 등을 손쉽게 알아차릴 수 있다.
마지막은 특정 정보를 담은 근거리무선통신(NFC) 태그를 활용하는 것이다. 해당 문신에 스마트폰을 쓱 갖다대면, 미리 지정한 노래가 흘러나오거나 별도의 웹페이지·앱(응용 프로그램)이 열리는 식이다.
◇전자 피부가 사람 살린다
전자 피부는 사물인터넷(IoT), 인공지능, 증강현실(AR), 빅데이터 등의 최신 기술과 결합해 다양한 시너지를 낼 것으로 전망된다. 전자 피부의 확산은 환자 원격진료뿐 아니라 건강한 사람을 위한 예방의학에도 도움이 된다. 실시간으로 생체 신호를 감지해 질병 징후를 찾아내고, 독거노인이나 혼자 여행 중인 사람이 위급 상황에 빠졌을 때 응급 구조에 활용할 수 있다.
전자 피부를 개발한 KAIST 유회준 교수는 "국내외 IT 기업들이 차세대 산업으로 웨어러블 헬스케어에 주목하고 관련 기기를 잇따라 출시하고 있다"면서 "시장 선점을 위해선 초저전력과 소형화를 비롯해 시계·밴드 같은 액세서리 수준을 한 단계 뛰어넘는 변화를 보여야 할 것"이라고 말했다.
